Google’s launch post for Google.ai says it was created in 2017 to “pulls all our AI initiatives into one effort”. That is Google’s description of a cross-company initiative, not a subsidiary of Google DeepMind.

Google’s current official sites also present Google AI and Google DeepMind as distinct Google properties. On the Google AI site, users are invited to “Build with cutting-edge Google DeepMind models,” and the footer separately lists Google AI, Google DeepMind, Google Labs, and Google Research. That setup is inconsistent with the claim that Google AI itself is a subsidiary of Google DeepMind.

Google’s own launch post says Google.ai was introduced on May 17, 2017 at Google I/O: Sundar Pichai wrote that Google.ai was the new effort that “pulls all our AI initiatives into one effort.”

Google DeepMind’s official history also separates the earlier labs from Google.ai: it says DeepMind started in 2010 and Google Brain started in 2011. So the article’s 2010 founding date appears to conflate Google AI with one of its predecessor organizations, rather than the Google.ai initiative itself.

Google’s own update on the Google AI China Center directly contradicts the implication that Beijing is still one of Google AI’s research locations. The page now states that the center launched in 2017 was “disbanded two years later” and adds: “We do not conduct AI research in China.”

So a present-tense list of Google AI research facilities that includes Beijing is outdated and inaccurate.
