The authenticity of the footage and the circumstances surrounding it have not been independently verified.
This was not an unverified new clip. The kneeling footage of U.S. Navy personnel in Iranian custody was identified years earlier as material from the January 12, 2016 Farsi Island detention, and the U.S. Navy later confirmed Iran photographed and video-recorded the crew.
Full reasoning
Multiple independent and official sources had already established the provenance of widely recirculating footage showing U.S. Navy sailors kneeling while detained by Iran.
- On June 30, 2016, the U.S. Navy said its Farsi Island investigation concluded that Iran "board[ed], search[ed] and seiz[ed] the boats and ... photograph[ed] and video record[ed] the crew." That is official confirmation that genuine video/images of the detained sailors existed and that the circumstances were investigated.
- USNI News published the Iranian footage on January 14, 2016 and identified it as footage from the January 12, 2016 detention of 10 riverine sailors on Farsi Island.
- In March 2026, AFP Fact Check documented that the same resurfacing visuals of U.S. Navy personnel detained by Iran were from 2016, not from the current conflict, and noted that media from that incident showed the sailors kneeling on their boat with their hands behind their heads.
So by July 15, 2026, describing this kneeling footage as something whose authenticity and surrounding circumstances "have not been independently verified" was misleading: the footage/circumstances had already been identified and documented long before.

The investigation concluded that Iran violated international law by impeding the boats' innocent passage transit and they violated our sovereign immunity by boarding, searching and seizing the boats and by photographing and video recording the crew.

While the images circulating on social media do show American sailors detained in Iran, they are from a decade before the latest outbreak of hostilities in the Middle East. Footage of the sailors kneeling with their hands clasped behind their heads... angered critics of the administration of president Barack Obama as well as US lawmakers.
