1958 was when mining at Helenesee ended, not when it began. The Brandenburg mining authority says operations began in the 1940s and the mine was shut down in 1959 after coal extraction started in 1944.

According to the Landesamt für Bergbau, Geologie und Rohstoffe Brandenburg (LBGR), the Helenesee mine began in 1940 with dewatering works, overburden removal followed in 1943, and coal was extracted from 1944 onward. The same official page says the Tagebau Helene was shut down in 1959.
So 1958/1959 refers to the end of mining, not its start. That means the article's wording that the former open-pit mine "started in 1958" is incorrect.
