Support For Trump's Proposed $5000 Check: Oppose: 63% Support: 17%
The Ipsos poll did not ask whether people supported or opposed the $5,000 payment itself. It asked whether it was appropriate for Trump to propose it, and found 63% said inappropriate and 17% said appropriate.
Full reasoning
The numbers 63% and 17% in the September 11–14, 2026 Reuters/Ipsos poll are real, but they were not reported as support/oppose for the $5,000 payment itself.
In the official Ipsos topline, the question was:
“Do you believe it is appropriate or inappropriate for President Trump to propose this dividend?”
Ipsos then reported:
- 17%: “Yes, it’s appropriate”
- 63%: “No, it’s inappropriate”
- 18%: “Not sure”
That is a different measure from asking whether respondents support or oppose the government sending $5,000.
A separate, direct-question poll from Economist/YouGov conducted the same September 11–14 period found 48% favor the government sending $5,000 to every adult citizen and 40% oppose it. That shows why relabeling the Ipsos numbers as “support” and “oppose” is misleading: the Ipsos question was about the appropriateness of Trump proposing the conditional dividend, not simple support for the payment itself.
