in 2025, the 15-day waiting period that was required previously was reduced to 48 hours.
This is not what Oregon law says. Oregon still requires a 15-day interval plus a separate 48-hour interval; a 2025 bill proposed changes, but it did not become law.
Full reasoning
Oregon’s official Death with Dignity materials still state two separate waiting periods:
- the patient must make two oral requests separated by at least 15 days; and
- 48 hours must elapse between the written request and the prescription.
The Oregon Health Authority FAQ says: “The patient must make two oral requests to the attending physician, separated by at least 15 days,” and separately explains that patients with less than 48 hours to live are exempt only from the 48-hour written-request waiting period.
The Oregon Revised Statute page likewise states: “No less than 15 days shall elapse between the patient's initial oral request and the writing of a prescription,” and also, “No less than 48 hours shall elapse between the patient's written request and the writing of a prescription.”
There was a 2025 Oregon bill, SB 1003, to modify the Death with Dignity Act, but the official Oregon Legislative Information System page shows it remained "In Senate Committee" rather than becoming enacted law. So the article appears to have confused a proposed 2025 change with the actual law.
