They had no internship opportunities open
Shopify did have internship opportunities; Julia’s own University of Waterloo profile says the issue was that Shopify had no marketing positions available, not that it had no internships at all.
Full reasoning
This overstates the situation. A University of Waterloo profile about Julia Fedorin says that when she made the video, Shopify “didn’t have any marketing positions available” and that Shopify “only hire engineers and data interns.” In other words, the obstacle was the lack of a marketing/social-media internship, not the total absence of internship opportunities.
That is consistent with Shopify’s official internship site, which lists multiple Engineering & Data Internship roles, including Applied Machine Learning Engineer Intern, Data Engineer Intern, Infrastructure Engineer Intern, Product Data Science Intern, Security Engineer Intern, and Software Engineer Intern. So the claim that Shopify had no internship opportunities open is broader than the available evidence supports and is contradicted by Shopify’s own internship program materials.
