Claim
the museum was closed in 1989
Correction
Contemporaneous reporting shows the Gori Stalin Museum closed in September 1988, not 1989.
Full reasoning
This date is contradicted by contemporaneous reporting.
- A Washington Post report published on September 21, 1988 describes the museum as already closed, noting that a "closed for renovation" sign hung outside the Stalin State Museum in Gori.
- A later Washington Post report from October 11, 1993 states that the museum was reopening "five years after it closed its doors" and explicitly says: "In September 1988 ... the museum decided to close its doors."
So the article's statement that the museum "was closed in 1989" is off by about a year; the closure had already happened in September 1988.
