This sentence compresses Jassy’s AWS roles into an incorrect date range.

Amazon’s official SEC filings state that AWS was founded in 2006, and that Jassy served as Senior Vice President of Amazon Web Services from April 2006 until April 2016, then served as Chief Executive Officer of Amazon Web Services from April 2016 until July 2021. That directly contradicts the claim that he was "SVP and CEO ... from 2003 to 2021."

So the article is wrong in two ways:

1. 2003 is too early for his AWS leadership roles in Amazon’s own filings.
2. He was not CEO for that whole 2003–2021 span; Amazon says he became AWS CEO only in April 2016.

A more accurate summary would be that Jassy helped originate the AWS idea in 2003, then led AWS from its inception in 2006, serving as SVP from 2006 to 2016 and CEO from 2016 to 2021.

Amazon’s official proxy statement for 2018 includes the 2016 Summary Compensation Table for named executive officers. In that table, Andrew R. Jassy’s 2016 total compensation is listed as $35,609,644.

That rounds to about $35.6 million, not $36.6 million. So the article overstates his 2016 pay by roughly $1 million.

This sentence misstates what Amazon’s 2025 proxy says.

In the proxy’s 2024 Summary Compensation Table, Amazon reports Andrew R. Jassy’s 2024 total compensation as $1,596,889. The same proxy separately reports an SEC-defined metric called “Compensation Actually Paid” for 2024 as $92,371,410. So $40.1 million is not the proxy’s reported “total compensation” figure for Jassy in 2024.

In other words, the article attributes a number to the proxy statement that does not match the proxy’s own compensation tables.
