Recent peer-reviewed sources contradict the species count in this sentence. A 2021 ZooKeys paper states that scoliid wasps “form a medium-sized family with approx. 560 species worldwide,” and a 2021 Insects paper likewise says the family has “approximately 560 species worldwide.” A 2022 Zootaxa review of Mexican Scoliidae also says the family is represented by “approximately 560 species worldwide.”
Because multiple recent taxonomic sources converge on a worldwide total of about 560 species, describing Scoliidae as a family of “around 300 described species” substantially understates the known diversity and is not consistent with current literature.
