Anthropic came very short of any such suggestion.

Anthropic did in fact suggest a coordinated slowdown or temporary pause in frontier AI development under verifiable conditions.

Full reasoning

Anthropic’s own June 2026 essay explicitly says “we believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development” and adds that “we expect that we would slow down or temporarily pause” if other frontier developers did so in a verifiable way. That is not “very short” of suggesting a pause; it is a direct endorsement of building the conditions for a coordinated temporary pause or slowdown.

The Wall Street Journal headline may still overstate Anthropic’s position by saying “urges global pause” instead of describing the proposal as conditional and coordination-dependent, but the post’s claim goes too far in the other direction. Anthropic plainly did suggest a temporary pause mechanism and said it would participate in one under the right conditions.

“We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development ... If such systems existed, we expect that we would slow down or temporarily pause, if other developers at or near the frontier also did so in a verifiable manner.”
