This date is off by one day. Official Azerbaijani government sources state that the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed on 28 May 1918. The President of Azerbaijan’s website says, “On 28 May 1918, the National Council of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic signed the Declaration of Independence,” and the same site’s history page says, “On May 28, 1918 ... Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed.”

A related event did occur on 27 May 1918: the Muslim faction of the Transcaucasian Sejm formed the Azerbaijani National Council. But the republic itself was proclaimed the next day, 28 May 1918.

The statement is contradicted by the current official rosters of Azerbaijan’s top courts.

The Supreme Court’s own leadership page lists Inam Imdad Karimov as Chief Justice, so the chief justice is not a woman. Separately, the Constitutional Court’s official composition page lists nine judges and identifies only one woman on the court — Mrs. Humay Afandiyeva. That means the article’s claim that a woman is chief justice and that two women are Constitutional Court justices is incorrect.

Baku State University was not the first modern-type university founded in the Muslim East.

Baku State University’s own history says the Azerbaijani parliament approved the university’s foundation on 1 September 1919 and that classes began on 15 November 1919. But Cairo University’s official history says the university was inaugurated on 21 December 1908, which is earlier by more than a decade. That alone contradicts the claim that Baku State University was the first such university in the Muslim East.

A second older example exists as well: the American University of Beirut says it was founded in 1866. Even if one used a narrower definition of “modern-type university,” Cairo University’s 1908 founding already disproves the statement about Baku State University being first.
