Mainly thanks to pharmaceuticals as well as aviation and space products.
Eurostat’s own 2025 breakdown shows pharmaceuticals drove the EU’s high-tech surplus with the US, but aerospace did not: the EU imported far more aerospace products from the US than it exported there.
Full reasoning
Eurostat’s 2025 high-tech trade release does support a large EU surplus with the United States overall in high-tech goods, but it does not support the claim that this surplus was mainly due to aviation and space products alongside pharmaceuticals.
According to Eurostat:
- EU high-tech exports to the US in 2025 were €195.1 billion.
- EU high-tech imports from the US in 2025 were €131.4 billion.
- Of exports to the US, 62% were pharmaceuticals and 12% were aerospace products.
- Of imports from the US, 36% were aerospace products and 33% were pharmaceuticals.
That means, using Eurostat’s published shares:
- Pharmaceuticals: about €121.0bn exported vs €43.4bn imported → a large surplus.
- Aerospace: about €23.4bn exported vs €47.3bn imported → a large deficit.
So pharmaceuticals clearly contributed to the surplus, but aerospace/aviation-space products did the opposite: they were a net negative, not a main reason for the surplus.
Even allowing for Eurostat’s category shares to be rounded to whole percentages, the conclusion does not change. With 12% of €195.1bn versus 36% of €131.4bn, aerospace imports from the US are far above aerospace exports to the US, so aerospace cannot plausibly be one of the main sources of the surplus.
