This biographical claim conflicts with standard reference works on Francisco Álvares. The Dictionary of African Christian Biography states that after returning to Portugal, Álvares went to Italy, presented letters to Pope Clement VII in 1533, and "remained in Rome until his death about ten years later." The New Catholic Encyclopedia entry reproduced by Encyclopedia.com likewise says he "remained in Italy, apparently in Rome, where he is said to have died." Those sources directly contradict the statement that he was killed on the way to Brazil.
