Anyone who claims that they didn't use AI in their research is being dishonest, because Google Search now has an AI Overview at the top.
This overstates how Google Search works. Google says AI Overviews appear only for some queries, and users can switch to a Web-only results view that excludes AI Overviews.
Full reasoning
Google's own Search Help documentation contradicts the idea that using Google Search necessarily means using AI.
- Google says: "You'll find AI Overviews in your Google Search results when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful". That means AI Overviews are not shown on every search.
- The same help page also says users can choose the Web filter, which "displays only text-based links without features like AI Overviews." So a person can use Google Search for research without viewing or relying on an AI Overview.
Because Google does not place an AI Overview at the top of every search, the post's blanket claim that anyone saying they didn't use AI in their research is necessarily dishonest is factually incorrect.
