sold it less than 18 months after hiring my first employees.
The timeline is off: Oculus had already announced key hires by August 14, 2012, and Facebook announced the acquisition on March 25, 2014—about 19 months later, not less than 18 months.
Full reasoning
A contemporaneous Oculus-sourced report published on August 14, 2012 says Brendan Iribe had joined Oculus as CEO and that Michael Antonov and Jack McCauley were also joining the company in senior roles. That means Oculus had employees on board by mid-August 2012 at the latest.
Facebook then announced its agreement to acquire Oculus on March 25, 2014. The time from August 14, 2012 to March 25, 2014 is about 19 months and 11 days, which is more than 18 months.
So the statement that Oculus was sold "less than 18 months after hiring my first employees" does not match the documented dates. If anything, the gap is longer still if one measures to the deal's later closing rather than the announcement date.
