But the book’s table of contents shows “Receiving empathically” is a later chapter, while the quoted lines appear under the heading “Communication That Blocks Compassion.”

Open Library’s catalog record for Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life lists the table of contents in order: “Giving from the heart,” “Communication that blocks compassion,” … “Receiving empathically.” That means “Receiving empathically” is not the chapter opened by the quoted passage.

A searchable PDF of the 3rd edition places the quoted text directly under the Chapter 2 heading “Communication That Blocks Compassion.” The relevant lines read that Rosenberg had identified forms of language that “contribute to our behaving violently” and that he uses the term “life-alienating communication” for them, immediately beneath that chapter title.

So the problem is not whether the quoted words exist—they do—but that the post incorrectly says they start the chapter on communicating empathetically.
