In the official Hedda script, David’s disturbance is a separate episode: he is caught having sex with Professor Greenwood’s wife, and the public gunshot in that scene comes from Professor Greenwood’s gun when Jane jumps on him. Later, Eileen takes Hedda’s pistol into a small room alone; the script says we hear "the sound of a gun cocking," and Brack later calls it "the gun that shot Eileen Lovborg," adding that Eileen "shot herself with" it. TIME’s analysis of the film’s ending likewise says Lovborg is "shot by a pistol accidentally going off in her own hand."
So the page’s version — that Eileen is shot during a scuffle with David — conflates separate scenes and gets the mechanics of the shooting wrong.
