And in a few months, you will have fish.
A new pond does not automatically end up with fish within a few months. Fish may appear only if they are introduced somehow, and wildlife agencies note that some ponds remain fishless.
Full reasoning
This sentence states the outcome as a certainty, but that is not how pond colonization works.
- New ponds do not automatically acquire fish. Purdue Extension says fish stocking is “typically only required for new or renovated ponds,” which directly indicates that a newly made pond will often not just develop a fish population on its own.
- Some ponds remain fishless. The Missouri Department of Conservation explicitly notes that there are “small, fishless ponds,” showing that the mere existence of a pond does not guarantee fish.
- Bird-mediated fish dispersal is possible, but not guaranteed and not a fast universal rule. A 2024 peer-reviewed paper on fish egg dispersal by waterbirds says the evidence for bird-mediated dispersal is still limited, and describes it as a potential mechanism, not something that means any new pond will contain fish within months.
So the broad claim "you will have fish" is too strong. Fish can arrive through stocking, flooding, accidental introduction, or sometimes birds, but it is not inevitable that a newly dug water-filled hole will contain fish after a few months.

- Passive dispersal potential of medaka eggs by attaching to waterbirds
The paper says bird-mediated fish dispersal evidence is still limited and discusses only the "possibility" of epizoochory/endzoochory, not a guaranteed outcome for new ponds.
