It was described as a new species in 1826 by German scientist Philipp Jakob Cretzschmar.
The species description is generally dated to 1830, not 1826. 1826 is the start date of the multi-part work in which the description later appeared.
Full reasoning
Recent taxonomic references do not date the original description of Barbastella leucomelas to 1826. The American Society of Mammalogists' Mammal Diversity Database gives the authority citation as Cretzschmar, 1830 and specifies that the original name Vespertilio leucomelas appeared on pages 69–73 of part 18 of Cretzschmar's 1826–1831 work. Wikispecies likewise lists the original combination as "Vespertilio leucomelas Cretzschmar, 1830".
So the problem is a date mix-up: 1826 is the first year of the serial publication Atlas zu der Reise im nördlichen Afrika, but the bat's own description is dated 1830 in current mammal-taxonomy references.
