Escapee of Auschwitz Concentration Camp (10 April 1944)
The date is wrong. Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba escaped Auschwitz on April 7, 1944, not April 10.
Full reasoning
Multiple authoritative sources date Alfréd Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba’s escape from Auschwitz to April 7, 1944. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum states that the Auschwitz Report was written by two prisoners who “escaped from Auschwitz on April 7, 1944.” The German History in Documents and Images project likewise says that “On April 7, 1944, the Slovak inmates Alfred Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba managed to escape from Auschwitz.”
The confusion likely comes from the fact that they hid for three days after breaking out. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum explains that on April 7 they went into a hiding place in Birkenau and made their way out after spending three days hiding there. So April 10 relates to when they emerged from hiding, not the date of the escape itself.
