formerly called the surintendant des finances
The contrôleur général des finances was not simply the old surintendant under a new name. The superintendency was abolished in 1661, and a controller-general was later placed at the head of royal finances.

This wording is inaccurate because it implies that surintendant des finances was just the former name of the contrôleur général des finances. The sources say something different:
- Larousse explains that after Nicolas Fouquet's fall, the office of superintendent of finances was suppressed in 1661, and Louis XIV then entrusted a controller-general of finances with the superintendent's functions in 1665.
- OpenEdition likewise states that following the suppression of the office of surintendant des finances, a contrôleur général des finances was placed at the head of the financial administration.
So the relationship is not "formerly called". The superintendency was abolished, and the controller-general became the later office heading the finances, inheriting much of the earlier office's role but not merely representing a straightforward renaming.
