This is also consistent with the ActivityPub specification timeline: the W3C published ActivityPub as a Recommendation on January 23, 2018. So listing Friendica’s initial ActivityPub-compatible release as 2010 is chronologically impossible.

Therefore, the date in the table is incorrect.

This table entry is under “Initial ActivityPub-compatible release.” For Hubzilla, the article gives 2015, but Hubzilla’s own project history contradicts that.

On Hubzilla’s official timeline page, Hubzilla 1 is described as being initially released with Zot, OStatus, and Diaspora federation protocols — not ActivityPub. The same official timeline later says that “Hubzilla and Mastodon begin to use ActivityPub to communicate with each other” and that “The PubCrawl addon was created, which adds ActivityPub as an additional protocol.” The page places those events alongside ActivityPub becoming a W3C Recommendation in 2018.

So Hubzilla was already a federated platform in 2015, but it was not initially ActivityPub-compatible then. Its own documentation shows that ActivityPub support arrived later, around 2018, making the table’s 2015 date incorrect.

The table labels this column “Initial ActivityPub-compatible release.” For Discourse, it lists 2025, but Discourse’s own official Meta forum shows an earlier public release.

On May 31, 2023, Discourse announced its ActivityPub Plugin, describing it as: “Discourse ActivityPub allows you to publish Discourse posts via ActivityPub” and linking to the official repository that “Adds ActivityPub support to Discourse.” That means Discourse had official ActivityPub compatibility by 2023, not 2025.

So even if ActivityPub support matured further later on, the article’s date for Discourse’s initial ActivityPub-compatible release is too late.
