This overstates first-year U.S. COVID mortality. CDC reported 513,122 total U.S. COVID deaths by March 2, 2021, and a national analysis covering March 2020 through April 2021 counted 519,320 official COVID deaths.
Full reasoning
The number is too high for the first year of the pandemic.
- CDC’s COVID Data Tracker reported 513,122 total U.S. COVID-19 deaths as of March 2, 2021, which is roughly the one-year mark after the pandemic began in the U.S.
- A later national mortality analysis covering March 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021 reported 519,320 deaths officially attributed to COVID-19 over that entire 14-month span.
So 750,000 is not a correct figure for U.S. deaths in the pandemic’s first year; that total was a bit over 500,000, not three-quarters of a million.
