Two years later I was the first person from an Indian state of 240 million people to get in.
This appears to be incorrect: MIT’s own historical records show students from present-day Uttar Pradesh attended MIT more than a century earlier.
Full reasoning
MIT’s own South Asia history exhibit contradicts the claim that this was the first person from that state to get into MIT.
Specifically, MIT Libraries says:
- "1904-5: Ishwar Das Varshnei came to MIT from Aligarh to study Chemical Engineering at MIT."
- "1907-8: Raj Kishore Misra came to MIT from Lucknow."
Both Aligarh and Lucknow are in Uttar Pradesh. The Government of Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow district site states that "Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh."
So if the post is referring to Uttar Pradesh (the state Kanpur is in, and the one commonly described as having roughly 240 million people), then the statement that he was the first person from that state to get into MIT is not correct. MIT documents earlier entrants from the same state decades before his admission.
