OpenAI caught someone planting a bugging device, by having their own hidden camera *behind a TV*.
This misstates how the device was discovered. Prosecutors say OpenAI found the recorder first, and the room did not have a camera when it was installed; a camera was added later and only captured the employee returning to check behind the TV.
Full reasoning
The official DOJ press release says OpenAI personnel discovered the recording device on September 30, 2026 in a USB port on the back of a television. It does not say OpenAI caught the employee planting it with a camera.
Reporting on the criminal complaint adds the key detail that the conference room did not have a camera at the time the device was installed. According to ABC/AP, OpenAI later added a camera to the room, and that camera captured Abdulrahman Alfozan returning on October 5 and checking behind the television where the device had already been placed.
So the post gets the sequence wrong in two ways:
- OpenAI did not catch him planting the device with a camera.
- The camera evidence was from a camera added later to the room, not proof that OpenAI already had its own hidden camera "behind a TV" when the device was planted.
The supported timeline is: device installed around September 28, 2026 → OpenAI discovered it on September 30, 2026 → camera later captured him checking behind the TV on October 5, 2026.
