They had no internship opportunities open
Shopify did have internship programs. What appears to have been new was Julia Fedorin’s non-technical marketing internship, not internships overall.
Full reasoning
This overstates the situation.
Shopify’s official internships site shows that the company already ran Engineering & Data Internships, with named intern roles and a defined hiring process (apply, assessments, interviews, decision). That contradicts the blanket claim that Shopify had "no internship opportunities open".
Julia Fedorin’s own follow-up post describes the opportunity more narrowly: she says Shopify "doesn't typically hire non-technical interns" and thanked the team for "making space for a role that didn't exist—until now." In other words, the unusual part was the creation of a marketing/non-technical internship for her, not the absence of internships at Shopify altogether.
So the article’s wording is too broad: Shopify had internship opportunities; Julia appears to have created a new kind of one.
