has just banned all fraternity social events for the remainder of the 2026-2027 academic year
Cornell did not suspend all fraternity social events across the university. Its October 13, 2026 directive applies specifically to parties and social events in Interfraternity Council (IFC) houses.
Full reasoning
Cornell’s own October 13, 2026 statement says: “All parties and social events in Interfraternity Council (IFC) houses at Cornell will be suspended for the remainder of the 2026-2027 academic year.” That is narrower than a ban on all fraternity social events.
Cornell also officially describes its sorority/fraternity system as having multiple governing councils, including the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Multicultural Greek & Fraternal Council (MGFC), which includes fraternities as well as sororities. Because the university’s announced suspension was limited to IFC houses, the post overstates the scope of the policy when it says Cornell “banned all fraternity social events.”
