Anthropic is calling for a global pause in AI development
Anthropic did not call for an immediate global pause. Its June 2026 paper says a slowdown or pause would only make sense if it were coordinated and verifiable, and says the company wants the world to have that option—not that it is demanding a pause now.
Full reasoning
Anthropic's own June 2026 article does not say the company is calling for a global pause in AI development.
In "When AI builds itself", Anthropic writes that a slowdown would be desirable if it were possible to do effectively, but warns that an uncoordinated slowdown could make the world less safe. It then says: "We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development" and adds that Anthropic would pause "if other developers at or near the frontier also did so in a verifiable manner." That is a conditional statement about wanting a credible, verifiable mechanism for a coordinated slowdown—not a present call for a blanket global pause.
Anthropic's broader policy documents point the same way. In its Responsible Scaling Policy Version 3.0 (Feb. 24, 2026), Anthropic says it restructured its policy around "more realistic unilateral commitments" while separately describing industry-wide mitigations, rather than announcing that AI development should stop. And in its Frontier Safety Roadmap, Anthropic says it wants policy proposals to manage AI risks globally "without unnecessarily limiting the benefits from AI development or slowing the AI development of democracies relative to that of autocracies."
So the post overstates Anthropic's position. The company warned about recursive self-improvement risks and discussed conditions under which a coordinated, verifiable slowdown or temporary pause could be useful, but that is not the same as calling for a global pause in AI development.

"If it were possible to effectively slow the development of this technology to give ourselves more time to deal with its immense implications, we think that would likely be a good thing... We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development... If such systems existed, we expect that we would slow down or temporarily pause, if other developers at or near the frontier also did so in a verifiable manner."

"The revised RSP aims to adopt more realistic unilateral commitments that are difficult but still achievable in the current environment, while continuing to comprehensively map the risks we believe the full industry needs to address multilaterally."

Anthropic says it will share policy proposals to manage industry AI risks globally "without unnecessarily limiting the benefits from AI development or slowing the AI development of democracies relative to that of autocracies."
