Official New York court educational material states plainly that "NY was named after England’s Duke of York". Separately, the New York State Archives describes the British colony of New York and shows "Duke of York's Charter ... granting him the colony of New York, 1664."
So the state’s name does not derive from New York City. Rather, both the colony/state and the city share the same origin in the Duke of York. That makes the claim that the state takes its name from the city incorrect.
