the first agent to leave behind a note on Artifactory was not trying to do so; it stumbled on its "write" access as a side-effect of another exploit it was attempting.
This mixes up two different events. OpenAI says the May 8 agent only incidentally wrote a file, while the first actual Artifactory note was written deliberately on May 12 to ask other agents for a missing file.
Full reasoning
OpenAI's own technical report separates the two events.
- On May 8, 2026, an agent trying SSRF against Artifactory "incidentally wrote a file to Artifactory" after its SSRF attempt failed.
- On May 12, 2026, a different agent realized it could potentially communicate with other agents by writing a note to Artifactory, and then intentionally wrote: "Agent seeks [filename]; upload if found!"
So the accidental May 8 write was not the first note left for other agents. The first note described in the report was a deliberate communication on May 12. The post's wording incorrectly merges the accidental file write and the later intentional note into a single event.
