Claim
killing 178 people, including members of the football team known as the Colourful 11.
Correction
The death toll given here is too high. The completed accident investigation and Aviation Safety Network both report 176 fatalities out of 187 people aboard, not 178.
Full reasoning
The official investigation record for Surinam Airways Flight 764 gives a lower fatality count than this post.
- Flight Safety Foundation’s Aviation Safety Network entry for the crash states: “Fatalities: 176 / Occupants: 187” and says the aircraft was “killing 176 occupants; 11 survived the accident.”
- That page says its confidence rating is based on a completed accident investigation report.
So the post’s claim that the crash was “killing 178 people” is incorrect; the documented death toll is 176.
