At least they show you how many reviews an establishment wanted to have removed.
Google says this notice is not a count of everything a business wanted removed. It shows only reviews that were actually removed after valid defamation complaints under German law, in the last 365 days, excluding removals later reversed on appeal.
Full reasoning
This sentence misstates what the Google Maps notice measures.
According to Google's own help page for this feature, the notice "shows the number of reviews removed from a Business Profile following a defamation complaint under German law." Google further explains that the displayed range includes only removals that:
- resulted from valid defamation complaints under German law;
- were processed in the last 365 days; and
- were not reversed after appeal.
So the banner is not a count of all reviews an establishment merely wanted removed. A business could have requested more removals that were denied, or some removals could later have been reinstated and therefore not counted. The notice reflects a narrower category: reviews actually removed under that legal process and still counted by Google's criteria.
