BREAKING - U.S. Navy personnel reportedly kneeling and weeping before Iran's IRGC.
This is not breaking footage from 2026. The attached scene is archival video from January 2016 showing 10 U.S. Navy sailors detained by Iran after their boats drifted into Iranian waters.
Full reasoning
The post presents the attached media as a current breaking event, but the same scene was published more than 10 years earlier.
- ABC News reported on January 13, 2016 that Iranian state TV had released video of the detained U.S. sailors, and described that video as showing the sailors in beige shirts kneeling with their backs to the camera and their hands on their heads.
- TIME published a Reuters still from that same incident on January 13, 2016, describing the image as U.S. sailors on a boat with their hands on their heads and stating the footage showed the moment 10 U.S. sailors were detained in Iranian waters.
- The Guardian also published the IRIB footage on January 13, 2016, saying it showed ten U.S. sailors captured by the Revolutionary Guards after entering Iranian territorial waters.
- CBS News likewise captioned frame grabs and photos from the incident as the detention of American Navy sailors by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on January 12–13, 2016.
So while the media does depict U.S. sailors being detained by Iran, it is archival footage from the January 2016 Farsi Island incident, not a new "breaking" development in July 2026.
