Claim
a wealthy lord, Sano Jirōzaemon
Correction
Sources on Sano Jirōzaemon describe him as a farmer/wealthy farmer or silk merchant from Sano in Shimotsuke, not as a lord.
Full reasoning
Multiple standard reference works contradict calling Sano Jirōzaemon a lord.
- Kotobank's Digital Daijisen identifies him as "江戸中期の下野佐野の農民" — a farmer from Sano in Shimotsuke in the mid-Edo period.
- Kotobank's Nipponica says the common account is that he was "野州(栃木県)の百姓" — a peasant/farmer from what is now Tochigi Prefecture.
- Kotobank's entry for the kabuki play Kagotsurube Sato no Eizame, which dramatizes this incident, describes Jirozaemon as "野州佐野の絹商人" — a silk merchant from Sano.
These sources differ on some details of the legend, but they agree that Sano Jirōzaemon was a commoner (farmer/merchant), not a feudal lord or daimyo. So describing him as "a wealthy lord" misstates his social status.
