We estimate that the maximal amount we could effectively use is $4-6M $7-10M* in addition to current funding levels
This funding figure is garbled. Apollo's original announcement said "$4-6M," and the LessWrong post itself says the figure was later updated on June 4 to "$7-10M"—not both at once.
Full reasoning
The sentence combines two different funding estimates into one claim.
- Apollo Research's original announcement on its own site says: "We estimate that we can effectively use an additional $4-6M."
- The LessWrong version of the post separately says in its later Status section that Apollo "could effectively use an additional $7-10M* in total funding," with a footnote: "*Updated June 4th after re-adjusting our hiring trajectory."
So the text "$4-6M $7-10M*" is not a valid single estimate; it appears to be an editing/rendering artifact where an older figure ($4-6M) and its later updated replacement ($7-10M) were both retained. Readers should understand the updated figure as replacing the earlier one, not being added to it.
