• Google/Sundar Pichai: In Google's official 25th-birthday note, Sundar Pichai wrote that a 2012 neural-network demo was the first moment he thought AI would "change everything," and that DeepMind's work on "understanding the nature of intelligence" influenced his decision in 2015 that Google should become an "AI-first" company. That's years before ChatGPT's 2022 release.
• Google DeepMind: Google's own overview says DeepMind started in 2010 with "an interdisciplinary approach to building general AI systems." So Google's leadership was backing an AGI-adjacent lab long before OpenAI's recent commercial pressure.
• Meta/Mark Zuckerberg: Meta said in January 2024 that Zuckerberg's long-term vision was to "build general intelligence". In Meta's Q4 2023 prepared remarks, Zuckerberg said FAIR had been working on general intelligence research for more than a decade.
• Microsoft/Satya Nadella: Microsoft's official July 22, 2019 announcement of its $1 billion partnership with OpenAI said the deal would help "deliver on the promise of artificial general intelligence" and described "OpenAI and Microsoft's vision" for AGI. Even if OpenAI influenced Microsoft's approach, that still shows Microsoft was publicly taking AGI seriously years before the post implies.
