• AP News reported that after pursuing a plan to convert into a for-profit, OpenAI “revers[ed] course” and said the nonprofit would continue to control the company; the article further explains that the existing for-profit arm would convert into a public benefit corporation, while the nonprofit retains control.

Given those descriptions, the post’s wording (“converted a nonprofit into an … for-profit”) is factually inaccurate as written, because it implies the nonprofit itself was turned into a for-profit entity rather than remaining as the controlling body.

Valuation note (secondary to the structural error): in late February 2026, AP reported OpenAI’s pre-money valuation at $730B, and Axios reported an $840B post-money valuation for the same funding event—numbers that don’t exactly match “$850B.”
