The National Hurricane Center's finalized post-storm report says Hurricane Marie "is believed to have caused four direct deaths" and then identifies those deaths as one surfer in Malibu and three fishermen presumed drowned near Cabo San Lucas. It does not include two river-flood fatalities in Colima.
That omission matters because the same NHC report explicitly defines direct deaths to include people who drown in freshwater floods. In other words, if two deaths along the Marabasco and San Nicolás rivers had been officially attributed to Marie, they would be part of the storm's direct-death total. The official NHC storm report and the 2014 eastern Pacific season summary both keep Marie's death toll at 4, not 6.
