The SEC filing dated May 15, 2026 that showed no Microsoft position was filed by Gates Foundation Trust for the quarter ended March 31, 2026—not by the Gates Foundation itself.

The Gates Foundation's own FAQ says: "The assets that fund the Gates Foundation are held by a separate entity, the Gates Foundation Trust" and that "Foundation staff have no influence over trust investment decisions". Its financials page likewise says the organization has a two-entity structure consisting of the Gates Foundation and the Gates Foundation Trust, with the trust's primary role being to manage the investment assets.

So the underlying idea that the Microsoft stake was exited appears to come from the trust's 13F filing, but the post incorrectly attributes that sale to the foundation rather than the trust. That distinction matters because they are separate legal entities with different roles.

For reference, the latest SEC 13F filing for Gates Foundation Trust (filed May 15, 2026) lists the trust's holdings for March 31, 2026 and does not include Microsoft. The prior 13F filing for December 31, 2025 did list Microsoft Corp. ... 7,691,207 SH, showing that the entity that exited the stake was the trust named in the filing.
