This combination had previously been tried only on 72 patients with glioblastomas
The cited literature shows more prior glioblastoma patients than 72 had already received this drug combination.
Full reasoning
The linked CeTeG/NOA-09 phase 3 trial did randomize 72 patients to the lomustine–temozolomide arm, but that was not the first prior experience with the combination in glioblastoma. The same Lancet paper notes that an earlier single-arm phase 2 UKT-03 trial included 31 patients treated with the same combined lomustine–temozolomide approach in newly diagnosed glioblastoma. So, before this case, the combination had already been used in more than 72 glioblastoma patients.
In other words, 72 is the size of the combination arm in the cited phase 3 trial, not the total prior number of glioblastoma patients ever tried on the regimen.
