Open models represented roughly 40% of token volume in June
Vercel’s own June report says open-weight models ran 29% of gateway tokens in June, not roughly 40%.
Full reasoning
Vercel’s official AI Gateway Production Index — July 2026, which explicitly says it reports on data collected in June 2026, states that “Open-weight models ran 29% of gateway tokens” in June and later repeats that “Open-weight models ran 29% of gateway tokens in June.” That is about 29%, not “roughly 40%.”
Vercel’s later AI Gateway Production Index — September 2026 also says August was the first month open-weight models took a majority, at 56%. That timeline is consistent with June being well below 40% and shows the post is overstating the June baseline used for its comparison.
So the June figure in the post is incorrect according to Vercel’s own published summaries of its AI Gateway data.
