The post’s own follow-up says Gemini chose an RFC 5737 TEST-NET-1 address. TEST-NET-1 is a documentation-only block reserved by IANA/ARIN, not a U.S. Department of Defense-assigned IP range.

Full reasoning

In the follow-up reply to this same post, the author says Gemini "pointed to RFC 5737" and that the address was "listed as TEST-NET-1 in RFC." RFC 5737 defines TEST-NET-1 (192.0.2.0/24) as an IPv4 block reserved for documentation and examples, not as an operational address block assigned to any organization.

Official registries back this up:

  • RFC 5737: 192.0.2.0/24 is TEST-NET-1, one of three blocks "provided for use in documentation," and addresses from these blocks "SHOULD NOT appear on the public Internet."
  • IANA IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Space: 192.0.2.0/24 is listed as Documentation (TEST-NET-1).
  • ARIN RDAP for 192.0.2.0/24: the network name is TEST-NET-1; it is marked reserved; and ARIN explicitly says these documentation blocks "should never be used in a live network configuration" and that "No one has permission to use these addresses on the Internet."

So if the inserted address was the RFC 5737 TEST-NET-1 address the reply describes, calling it "a USA Dept of Defense IP" is incorrect. At most, the post is conflating a documentation-only example address with unrelated BGP/ASN lookups.

In the follow-up reply on the same page, the author says: "When I asked why... since the code was written from the ground up, Gemini pointed to RFC 5737. And yeah, it's listed as TEST-NET-1 in RFC..."

  • RFC 5737: IPv4 Address Blocks Reserved for Documentation

"The blocks 192.0.2.0/24 (TEST-NET-1), 198.51.100.0/24 (TEST-NET-2), and 203.0.113.0/24 (TEST-NET-3) are provided for use in documentation." "Addresses within the TEST-NET-1 ... blocks SHOULD NOT appear on the public Internet".

  • IANA IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Space

    Lists "192.0.2.0/24 — Documentation (TEST-NET-1)".

  • ARIN RDAP record for 192.0.2.0/24

Name: "TEST-NET-1"; status: "reserved"; remarks: "Addresses starting with \"192.0.2.\" ... are reserved for use in documentation and sample configurations... No one has permission to use these addresses on the Internet."
