Ted Kaczynski was not out of prison in 2000. He was arrested in 1996, pleaded guilty in 1998, and remained in federal custody until his death in 2023.

The FBI’s history page on the Unabomber case says Kaczynski was arrested on April 3, 1996 and that, after his guilty plea in January 1998, his “new home” was “an isolated cell in a ‘Supermax’ prison in Colorado.” NPR’s 2023 obituary, citing the Bureau of Prisons via AP, also reports that Kaczynski died in federal prison on June 10, 2023.
So if there was a letter exchange in 2000, it was while Kaczynski was incarcerated, not after he was out of prison.
