Robertson's expedition, which began on 23 April 1949, was also the first to reach the foot of the falls.
This overstates Robertson's 1949 expedition. Credible sources say Aleksandrs Laime had already reached Angel Falls on foot in 1946 or 1947, so Robertson's expedition was not the first ever to reach the base.
Full reasoning
The claim says Ruth Robertson's 1949 expedition was the first to reach the foot of Angel Falls. But multiple sources contradict that:
- A scholarly article in Terrae Incognitae says Robertson's guide, Alejandro (Aleksandrs) Laime, had already gone to the base of the waterfall in 1946 or 1947 and pioneered the route; it describes Robertson's 1949 journey as the first successful attempt to reach the falls, not the first ever person to do so.
- Fundación Etnika's history page likewise says Laime was "the first recorded human to reach Angel Falls on foot" and that he later accompanied Ruth Robertson on her expedition.
So Robertson's expedition may have been the first successful or first well-documented expedition, but it was not the first reach to the foot of the falls if Laime had already done so years earlier.
