Claim
built by Chinese immigrants in 1916
Correction
Locke, California is generally dated to 1915, not 1916. Official histories from the Locke Foundation and the National Park Service say the town was founded and built by Chinese immigrants in 1915.
Full reasoning
The post dates Locke’s founding to 1916, but the town’s own historical organization and the National Park Service both place its founding in 1915.
- The Locke Foundation says: “Founded in 1915, Locke is the largest and most intact surviving example of an historic rural Chinese-American community in the United States.”
- The National Park Service likewise says the Locke Historic District “was built in 1915 by Chinese immigrants” and that “The town of Locke was founded in 1915.”
So the article’s year is off by one: the accepted founding date for Locke is 1915, not 1916.
