Genovese with Italian bandit Salvatore Giuliano, in 1940
The caption’s year is wrong. Giuliano did not become a bandit until 1943, and image archives date this photo only to the 1940s, not specifically 1940.
Full reasoning
This caption cannot be right as written.
First, Treccani says Salvatore Giuliano "nel 1943 costituì una banda" (“in 1943 he formed a band”), i.e. his career as the famous Sicilian bandit begins in 1943, not 1940.
Second, commercial image archives do not date this photo to 1940. The Bridgeman Images listing for this exact image describes it as a 1940s image and notes Genovese is in military uniform. A separate Getty listing likewise describes the photo as Giuliano with Genovese “wearing a US army uniform” in Sicily, 1940s.
So the caption is too specific and historically inconsistent: the image is from the 1940s, and the year 1940 is incompatible with Giuliano’s timeline as a bandit.
