This sentence overstates how long Keiko Fujimori’s party controlled the legislature.

Popular Force did win a dominant majority in the 2016–2019 Congress, but that did not continue for “a decade.” After the 2019 dissolution of Congress, the 2020–2021 Congress seated a much smaller Fujimorist bloc: El Peruano reports that Fuerza Popular had 15 representatives in that chamber. Then, in the 2021 general election, IFES Election Guide records that Popular Force won 24 of 130 seats, while Peru Libre won 37—again showing Fujimori’s party did not control Congress. Even in the 2026 bicameral Congress, El Peruano says Fuerza Popular obtained 41 of 130 deputies (the largest bloc, but not a majority) and that six parties won seats.

So the article’s claim that the 2016 majority meant Fujimori and her party were “controlling Congress for a decade” is incorrect. Their commanding control ended years earlier, and subsequent legislatures were fragmented rather than dominated by Popular Force.
