Follow-up reporting on the June 15, 2025 WestFest shooting says the extra murder count was not based on one of the two wounded victims. Instead, prosecutors said one of the three people killed, 41-year-old Fnu Reena, was discovered to have been eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

Contemporaneous reporting from KUER states that the three people killed were a 41-year-old woman, an 8-month-old infant, and an 18-year-old male, and that "Two other teenagers were shot in the arm." The same report separately notes that "A pregnant woman was hurt while attempting to climb a fence to escape the gunfire."

Then, when charges were filed, AP and KSL both reported that the fourth murder count came from the fact that the 41-year-old woman who was killed was pregnant. KSL wrote that investigators discovered "the 41-year-old woman who was killed was eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death" and that the defendant was charged for "the fetus of the pregnant woman who was killed."

So the article's wording is wrong in two ways:

1. it says one of the two wounded was the pregnant person whose fetus led to the charge; and
2. it implies the fourth murder charge came from that wounded victim.

The record instead shows the two wounded gunshot victims were teenagers, while the fourth murder charge was tied to an unborn child of a woman who was killed.

The parenthetical location here is inaccurate. U.S. Department of Justice press releases about the East Coast Crips describe the gang as South Los Angeles-based and say it claims a large swath of territory in South Los Angeles.

One DOJ release says the East Coast Crips (ECC) are a gang "which claims a large swath of territory in South Los Angeles," and specifies territory "running from 1st Street to 190th Street, between the 110 Freeway and Central Avenue." Another DOJ release calls ECC a "South Los Angeles-based" gang.

So while the name East Coast Crips can sound like a reference to East Los Angeles, the organization being discussed in major federal cases is identified by law enforcement as operating in South Los Angeles, making the article's parenthetical "from East Los Angeles" misleading.
