ultimately becoming the year's biggest-selling single
This is incorrect for 2003 in the UK. Official Charts says the biggest-selling single of 2003 was Black Eyed Peas' "Where Is The Love?", not Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' "Mad World."
Full reasoning
The clause says the 2003 cover of "Mad World" became the year's biggest-selling single in the UK. Contemporary and official chart sources contradict that.
- The Official Charts Company says Black Eyed Peas' "Where Is The Love?" "sold over 625,000 copies in 2003 to finish as the biggest selling single of the year."
- NME, reporting figures released by the Official UK Chart Company to Music Week in January 2004, likewise states that "Where Is The Love?" was "the biggest selling single of the year".
So while "Mad World" did become the UK Christmas number one in 2003, the article's further claim that it was the year's biggest-selling single is wrong. The evidence indicates that distinction belonged to "Where Is The Love?" instead.
