Since they’re now spending more cash than they are earning
The evidence cited here points to sharply lower cash generation, not to the major hyperscalers already being cash-flow negative as a group. Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft still reported positive cash flow/free cash flow in their latest official filings, and the Yahoo article quoted in the post said combined free cash flow could still be about $4 billion.
Full reasoning
This overstates what the underlying evidence shows.
The post quotes a Yahoo Finance article saying the combined free cash flow of Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta could drop to around $4 billion in the third quarter. That is a major decline, but it is still positive, not "spending more cash than they are earning" as a group.
The companies' own disclosures before this post was published also showed continued positive cash generation:
- Amazon reported trailing-12-month operating cash flow of $148.5 billion and free cash flow of $1.2 billion as of Q1 2026.
- Alphabet reported $45.8 billion of operating cash flow and $10.1 billion of free cash flow in Q1 2026, and Yahoo's cited article itself says analysts expected Alphabet to remain free-cash-flow positive for the full year.
- Microsoft reported $46.7 billion of net cash from operations in fiscal Q3 2026 and $30.9 billion of additions to property and equipment, which still implies roughly $15.8 billion of positive cash generation before other investing uses.
Those facts support a claim that AI capex is squeezing free cash flow. They do not support the stronger claim that the hyperscalers were already spending more cash than they were earning.
